Delhi to train 6,000-7,000 people under new AI centres of excellence plan

Delhi’s two newly approved AI Centres of Excellence (AICoE) aim to train 6,000-7,000 individuals as part of a broader push to build a skilled AI workforce in the capital, according to a statement from the Delhi IT Department. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has granted administrative approval for the centres at Netaji Subhash University of Technology (NSUT) and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.

The initiative is backed by a joint funding model involving MeitY, the Delhi government and industry partners, and also aims to support around 90-100 startups and generate more than 1,000 employment opportunities. Industry partner commitments and a key performance indicator framework have already been submitted, with an MoU between MeitY and partner institutions now being finalised.

Delhi IT Minister Pankaj Singh reviewed the project on Wednesday, alongside a separate AI IT training lab for government officers at Vikas Bhawan II, which officials said is fully ready and expected to be operational within a month.

Officials said the centres are intended to promote AI-led innovation, strengthen Delhi’s startup ecosystem and accelerate AI deployment in government departments for improved public service delivery.
