‘Pay isn’t everything’: Accenture CEO Julie Sweet’s advice on choosing between a big company and a startup
Accenture CEO Julie Sweet says pay alone shouldn't decide whether to join a large company or a smaller one.
Choosing between a large company and a smaller one isn’t just about the paycheck, according to Accenture CEO Julie Sweet — even as she acknowledges that bigger employers do tend to pay more. ‘If you choose to work at a larger company over a smaller company, you are more likely to be higher paid,’ she said.
Larger firms, Sweet explains, typically have bigger budgets to offer higher salaries, larger bonuses and stronger benefits, along with clearer career paths, leadership development, international opportunities and company stock — all of which can add up to significantly higher total compensation over time.
But Sweet’s quote comes with a caveat: pay isn’t the only thing worth weighing. Startups and small businesses can offer faster growth, more responsibility early on, closer access to top leadership, and sometimes equity that could be worth a lot if the company succeeds.
Her advice, ultimately, is to weigh the full picture before choosing — what you’ll learn, how fast you’ll grow, the culture, flexibility, job security, and the kind of work you actually want to do — since bigger paychecks at bigger companies aren’t automatically the better career move for everyone.
