MG’s New Plug-In Hybrid Could Finally End ‘Range Anxiety’ for Diesel SUV Buyers
MG Motor India will launch its first plug-in hybrid later this financial year as an alternative for diesel SUV buyers, part of a wider push toward new-energy vehicles.
Diesel SUV buyers in India may soon have a new option to consider. JSW MG Motor India plans to launch its first plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) later this financial year, and the company is positioning it specifically as an alternative for customers who would otherwise choose a diesel SUV.
Managing director Anurag Mehrotra said a PHEV combines the low running costs of an electric vehicle with the reassurance of a petrol engine for longer journeys, removing range anxiety while avoiding dependence on charging infrastructure. The technology is widely used in China and Europe but has yet to gain a foothold in India, where automakers have largely stuck to either pure EVs or conventional hybrids.
The new PHEV will be built on MG’s newly unveiled ADAPT (Advance Drive Architecture Platform Technology), which the company calls India’s first multi-new-energy-vehicle platform. The architecture is designed to support battery EVs, hybrids, PHEVs and range-extender EVs — collectively termed new-energy vehicles, or NEVs — on a single common base.
The PHEV launch is part of a broader shift at MG, which now expects NEVs to account for nearly 80% of its total sales this year, ahead of its own long-term target of 75%. Mehrotra said passenger vehicle EV penetration nationally had slipped below 4% at the start of 2026 but crossed 8% by June, driven by rising fuel prices and growing awareness of running-cost savings. ‘Demand is not the challenge any more. The challenge is giving customers enough choice,’ he told TOI.
MG’s shift mirrors wider changes across the Indian auto industry. Tata Motors, still the country’s largest electric passenger vehicle maker, now sees EVs make up around a fifth of its passenger vehicle sales, while Mahindra’s electric range contributed about 12% of its passenger vehicle volumes in June. Industry-wide, EV sales are growing at roughly 70%, well ahead of the overall passenger vehicle market.
