Spain’s longest river is hiding a bacterial secret scientists can’t ignore
A year-long study of Spain's Tagus River has found antibiotic-resistant bacteria and signs of faecal contamination at multiple sites along its length.
Spain’s longest river is carrying more than water through Toledo and the rest of the Iberian Peninsula. A year-long scientific investigation has found antibiotic-resistant bacteria and clear signs of faecal contamination in the Tagus River, and researchers say the problem is not confined to one dirty stretch, it shows up across the entire basin.
Researchers from the University of Castilla-La Mancha sampled 19 monitoring stations placed at different points along the river over nearly a year, publishing their findings in the journal Environmental Research. At each site, the team tested for bacteria that no longer respond to common antibiotics, alongside markers that point to untreated or poorly treated sewage entering the water system.
The team traced the contamination to a mix of sources: human sewage, agricultural runoff, and waste from livestock farming, where antibiotics given to animals can wash into rivers through manure. Contamination levels shifted from site to site, but the underlying pattern held everywhere the researchers looked, pointing to multiple overlapping human activities rather than a single source that could be shut down.
What worries the scientists most is not the bacteria themselves but what they can pass on. Polluted rivers give resistance genes a place to move between different bacterial species, something far harder to contain once it happens in the open environment than inside a hospital ward. A 2022 Lancet analysis already linked bacterial antimicrobial resistance to nearly 5 million deaths worldwide in 2019, with 1.27 million of those deaths directly caused by resistant infections.
Modern wastewater treatment plants remove most pollutants, but the study is a reminder that they do not necessarily eliminate every resistant organism before water is released back into rivers. Research published in Nature Reviews Microbiology has separately flagged rivers and wastewater systems as environmental reservoirs that let resistant bacteria move between communities and ecosystems.
The Tagus has long carried ecological, cultural and economic weight for Spain, and the researchers hope their findings push policymakers toward tighter monitoring, better sewage treatment and more careful use of antibiotics in both healthcare and farming. As they note, keeping rivers from turning into bacterial reservoirs may end up mattering as much as developing new medicines to fight resistant infections.
