Airplane windows aren’t oval for looks: the real reason is structural safety
Airplane windows are round or oval rather than square for a purely structural reason: sharp corners concentrate stress during repeated cabin pressurization.
Anyone who has flown has likely wondered why commercial aircraft windows are rounded or oval rather than square, even though square windows would seem to offer better visibility. Contrary to popular belief, there is nothing aesthetic about the curved design; it comes down purely to safety.
Modern commercial airliners typically fly at altitudes of 30,000 to 40,000 feet, where the atmosphere is unsuitable for breathing, so cabins are pressurized to simulate conditions at lower altitudes. This creates a significant pressure difference between the inside and outside of the aircraft. The plane’s body expands during pressurization after takeoff and retracts on landing, a cycle that repeats tens of thousands of times over an aircraft’s lifespan.
Square or rectangular windows carry a specific risk: their sharp corners act as stress concentrators, where pressure is unevenly distributed. Cracks can start forming at these points during pressurization and grow over time, eventually leading to structural failure. Rounded or oval window shapes eliminate the sharp corners that create this risk.
This lesson was learned the hard way in the early 1950s, when the de Havilland Comet, the first commercial jet airliner, flew with large square windows and broke apart in mid-air several times. Investigations found that pressurization caused fatigue cracks to form around the sharp edges of the square windows, which spread through the aircraft structure until it failed. The disasters prompted a revolution in aircraft construction, and all modern aircraft now use round windows along with increased structural strength.
The oval shape also offers aerodynamic benefits, since circular openings fit better into the curves of the fuselage, reducing local stress points and geometrical discontinuities in the aircraft’s structure. Though modern engineering could likely make square windows withstand pressure better than in the 1950s, decades of proven safety and efficiency mean oval and circular windows remain the standard on commercial aircraft.
