Sardinia’s dream beaches now demand bookings: here’s why

Turning up at a Sardinian beach on a whim is no longer an option at some of the island’s most famous coastal spots. According to a Fox News report, several beaches on Sardinia, the Italian island in the Mediterranean, have rolled out advance reservation systems, daily visitor limits and entry fees, all aimed at curbing overtourism and protecting fragile coastal ecosystems.

The changes mean travellers now have to plan their beach days weeks ahead rather than deciding on the morning of a trip. Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean and draws huge numbers of visitors every summer for its clear waters, white sand and dramatic coastline, and that popularity has taken a visible toll on the shoreline.

Local authorities have grown increasingly worried about the effects of overtourism in recent years. Large crowds, damage to coastal vegetation, erosion of sand dunes and mounting pressure on local ecosystems have pushed officials to cap the number of daily visitors at certain beaches.

La Pelosa Beach, one of the island’s best-known attractions, is among the strictest cases. Known for its shallow turquoise water and soft white sand, it now allows only 1,500 visitors a day. Anyone hoping to visit must book a slot online in advance, pay a small entrance fee and show a booking confirmation or QR code at the gate.

Cala Goloritzé, a protected beach famous for its towering limestone cliffs, is even more tightly controlled, with just 250 people allowed in per day during the tourist season. Reservations and an entry fee are mandatory there as well. A booking platform that manages reservations for several of the island’s beaches says around 16 beaches and coves across Sardinia have now introduced similar caps or access controls.

For travellers, that means booking slots weeks before a summer trip, since availability can fill up fast. Anyone arriving without a valid reservation risks being turned away at the entrance, even after travelling a long distance to get there — a reminder that on Sardinia’s most sought-after beaches, planning ahead now matters as much as packing the sunscreen.
